Disney on Ice and Me

I'm just going to be up front about this. Yes, I was a Disney fan as a kid. Sunday night family movies from Disney made me excited beyond belief. I could not contain my face-cracking smiles and hysteria over meeting the big mouse himself on our family trip to Disney World when I was five.

I even had a Mickey Mouse watch in high school. It was leather with a gold on gold face. Subtle, you know? I once ate at Burger King every week for a month just to score all the Jack Skellington 'Nightmare Before Christmas' watches.

When I got into my angsty young adulthood Disney, it's corporations and princesses smacked of everything I was against. "No rescue!" I would yell at the princesses that glossed the movie and television screens only to have them stare back at me blankly as they multiplied like Easter rabbits. Being "down with the system and the man" was what I was all about.

Then I had kids. People who knew me smirked and told me how suddenly my home would be filled with tiny plastic Disney gear and it would be like the Mouse himself had vomited onto my beige den carpet. I continued to feel otherwise and proved them wrong. That is until my three year-old daughter hit school age and now no matter what she has become knowledgeable about Disney, simply through attending birthday parties and school.

And it's a good thing- in moderation. We've watched 'The Little Mermaid', 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Cinderella' right along with 'The Jungle Book', 'The Aristocats' and a host of other Disney movies on our "Friday Night Movie" night. She still doesn't own any clothing, toys or gear from Disney but I find I cannot deny her the happiness I felt as a child when these movies transported me into a "whole new world". The songs, the vibrant colors and lessons are beautiful, fun and pretty safe for her to take part in. The princess complex I obsess about - well, that's where parenting and guidance comes in. Moderation is key, of course.

When Feld Entertainment and Mom Central asked me if I would like to participate in promoting and reviewing Disney on Ice- Celebrations. I have to admit I got excited. I always wanted to attend an event like that as a kid, but my small town didn't host them. Just the thought of seeing TD's face light up as she watches her favorite characters come to life on the ice is more than enough for me. I'll survive and enjoy it too simply because it will make her happy. Besides, I hear Jack Skellington might be there and some wicked queens too! I have always preferred Ursula the Sea Witch and that crew to any of the princesses.

  1. I too, had a Mickey watch in high school, as well as a Tigger and a Dopey. My sweet sixteen cake was Beauty and the Beast (my mom's choice, however, not mine though I was secretly pleased as I tried to hold on to my childhood).
Beauty and the Beast has always my favorite Disney movie, however the Evil Queen from Snow White was always one of my favorite characters. I have never been able to avoid Disney, I just sucumb to the power it has over me (and my kids! lol).
We have seen the shows and I'm so glad you'll be able to watch TD's face light up every 5 minutes. They truly are magical. We took The Girl to see Princesses on Ice several years ago, and have seen Nemo and Incredibles since then. :)
    Enjoy

  2. Although I never had a Mickey watch I did have Mickey earrings that I wore faithfully. I remember going to Disney when I was young with my parents before it became so commercialized. I own all the Disney classic movies started collecting them way before I had children with the "execuse" that I will have them when I have children...many of dateless nights I spent with the heroes of Disney. Now I share these memories with my 3 kids...and I am able to enjoy all the wonderment again.

  3. I still have my wind-up Mickey watch my grandfather gave to me just months after I was born. Although it doesn't fit my wrist any more, I still have it in my jewelry box, and I doubt I will give that to any of my children. My grandfather still wears a Mickey watch to this day mostly because growing up he always wanted one, his family was not able to afford one so as soon as he could buy one of his own he did.
He is also responsible for all 3 of my childhood visits to Disney World as well. I remember being in the 3rd grade and walking into Disney World for the first time. I honestly felt like I was dreaming walking the streets, looking into the store windows and of course the rides...who could forget the rides! As a child I felt that was the best trip a kid could take, and as an adult I appreciate the time my grandfather devoted to making that trip so vivid in my mental history. To be honest, I think he enjoyed the trip and rides more than the kids:). Disney has always held a special place in my heart because it seemed to bring my dysfunctional family together and allow us to get along and seem "normal" for at least a brief period of time.
I have not taken my kids to Disney World, and hope that we are able to go one day. I hope the experience is as magical for them as it was (and still is) for me.

We just went to Disney this summer and we had a magical moment when my 2 year old daughter sat in mary poppins lap. She hated all the furry characters, but there was something about Mary Poppins. It was so cute!

  5. I(28 years old) have never been to Disney but with 4 kids I'm hoping to make it there sometime in the future. I had a watch, shirts, sweatshirts etc. with Mickey on it. I always thought I was the coolest kid when I walked around in my Mickey gear lol. My children also have Mickey and other Disney sweatshirts that they LOVE. We have so many VHS Disney movies and we will pull out our old VCR on our Family movie night and watch Disney movies, I'm sure my kids will always remember those nights as I know they enjoy them more then anything.
Like I said at the beginning, hopefully, some day I'll be able to take them to Disney :)

  6. I remember my first trip to Disney World as a child. All 4 kids in my family piled in the station wagon, and took to the road in the wee hours of the morning. I remember finally arriving at Disney, taking the tram into the park, and wow! The castle! The characters walking around! They really know how to make an impression. I remember riding on "It's a Small World" about 7 times in a row because there was no line. We probably would have done it even more except that may have pushed my mom over the edge if she had to listen to that song one more time. 2 years ago, we had a chance to take our two young children to Disney. Even as an adult, it was still a magical place. I was still in awe of that castle! And yes, we did ride "It's a Small World." Even though my daughter was only 2 at the time, she got a big kick out of it. And she still remembers the Dumbo ride!
