Confessions of a Grocery Whore

Hi there loyal Mummy readers! This is Stacy, aka: The Fabulous Miss S. I am guest posting here today for our dear Mummy, Victoria who is recovering from a nasty cold and child birth.

Congratulations and GET WELL!! Vicky.

I hear that the first step is admitting you have a problem? Well, I have a problem. I am a Grocery Store whore. No, I am not whoring myself at the local market, but rather, I shop at a minimum of three different stores each week and none of them know about each other. And it is leaving me a wee bit exhausted.

I live in a nice little suburban area of Maryland where if I turn left out of my neighborhood I arrive at Safeway. If I go straight out of my neighborhood I come to a Shoppers Food Warehouse. Right leads me to a just-remodeled Giant and left-straight-right-left lands me at Trader Joe's. I get a major kick out of saving bucks these days so I read the sale fliers and shop for specific items at specific stores. I hit up Trader Joe's about twice a month for organic produce and white bean-basil hummus. Shoppers Food Warehouse is the only grocery store that carries wine and beer so I have to go there about twice a month for my parental coping devices.

You probably have one of two responses to my schizophrenic grocery loyalty; 1) You totally understand me and don't see why this is a problem, to which I say, More power to You honey!, or, 2) You understand my ordeal but also realize that this is not a reasonable item on the errands-to-do list. As if I enjoyed hopping from one crowded parking lot to another - WHICH I DO NOT - I also have a baby to tote around with me. I'm not just jumping out of my sporty-SUV with a Michael Kors bag on my arm ready to tackle the latest grocery-store agenda, reality is, I'm navigating parking lots while handing out veggie puffs and animal crackers to an 11-month old who does not understand why Mommy needs to stop at yet another grocery store today.

He learned early how best to deal with my grocery store OCD.

My problem straddles two issues, my desire to save $.35 on Coke Zero and my deep love affair with white bean-basil hummus and affordable, fresh organic foods. I'm not willing to give up my savings or my specialty foods, so I guess I am stuck in this Groundhog Day of grocery store shopping for my foreseeable future.

Do you have a preferred food store or any suggestions for a nutty mom like me?

  3. I'm like this, too. There's a Safeway I go to at lunchtime (walk from my office), but I also go to the Giant and Bloom (formerly Food Lion) near my house. And when I have extra time to kill (hah), I go to Wegman's and/or Whole Foods.

But lately when I need a couple of quick things, I've been going to the Asian grocery store near my house--it's a full-size supermarket, but with a lot of specialty products.

And on top of all of that, I really miss the Harris Teeter and the Trader Joe's near my old office.

Wow, I'm definitely a grocery store whore.
